The latest seems to be published in 2011 so could be already out of date

I was recently given the latest (12th Edition) Chambers as a present - there were some rumours last year (year before?) that this would be the last edition they're printing. I wouldn't be without it & it's available at a reasonable price on Amazon - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Chambers-Dictionary-12th-ed/dp/055010237X (Ginnel is in there...)

It probably just misses modern slang that ought not to be in it anyway.
You can always use an Internet dictionary site.
yup, thes days I would google.
The standard dictionary used by crossword compilers is Chambers.
The online Oxford Dictionary is updated quarterly...

for slang. Anything else it probably doesn't matter if your dictionary is two years old. What sort of thing are you looking for exactly?

You can Google words - just search for "define horse" or whatever.
Click http://www.chambers.co.uk/search.php put the word you are looking for into the empty slot and click 'Search'.
It depends what you want to use it for. If it's daily crossword solving you can't go far wrong with the Oxford Dictionary in any of its forms. In fact that applies to general use. Collins is good for place names

And Chambers is good for word games :-)
Chambers fails on 'Ginnel'.
Gromit - Chambers fails on 'Ginnel'.

It is in my copy.
IN NI we call a ginnel an entry.
