What do I search for and what is it called just 'dotted text'

I would try what you have just suggested.

Maybe more fruitful to look for free fonts in general and try to spot by eye a dotty 'date stamp' type such as you see on cans.

They have to be kidding. Maybe you can download a font creation app and build your own ! Heck some parts of letters look much like other parts of other letters. Design a vertical, horizontal, a couple of slopes and curves and I suspect you can generate a whole alphabet, lower & upper case.

Try http://www.Myfonts.com find a font.

You will need to crop the photo to just one or two letters and upload it to their site. It will find it or similar fonts.

Not sure it is a real font as such. But try it.
