In the past year I have put on a bit of weight mainly due to the fact I cant exercise at the gym as much as I did a year ago I was doing 5 classes a week but due to a lot of joint and lower back pain I gave up to do more gentle exercise like walking as often as possible now from when I was young I have always been very slim on hips bottom a bit boyish actually but within this last year my hips have widened bottom is bigger although my legs are still quite slim, what I would like to know is could this all be to do with just the weight gain or age related as well and to do with peri menopause/menopause

You usually go thicker round the middle in middle age. Could just be not doing the exercise, you could try yoga or Pilates which are less stress on the joints and back.
Nothing to do with the Gym---Eat less !!
