I was given the book years ago by a lady friend who raved about it, I attempted to read at a few times but couldn't ever quite get into it, perhaps I would now.
Luchino Visconti's film of 1963 with Burt Lancaster as the protagonist is very good, you can find bits (and maybe all) of it on youtube.

I seem to have found a way to get outside of the avatar by starting with a dot, then stretching the box downwards by using the tiny arrow head bottom right of the box and then repeatedly using key which gives a new line about 20 times so presumably this post will begind with a large void.
