I have just finished this book, not having it read again since the 1970s.

I know it was based on a real life Court Case ::::::

But one thing I didn't really understand is this. The Surgeon won his libel case, but the Jury only awarded him one half-penny in damages. Evidence was produced that the Surgeon did indeed perform operations without using anaesthetics.

So, why did he win the Court case at all ?

I hope New judge is on here today !
