Rhythm

What instrument holds the rhythm in the begining of Stravinsky's 'The Shrovetide Fair' and is it a string or wind instument playing the fairground melody at the end? Please help!

Having just downloaded and listened to it ..it sounds to me like a double bass and a piccolo at the end ..but I am no music buff..perhaps someone else may come along to help.
