A Fantasy Book

As a child I read a book about a girl in a mythical land. Her name was Ariel I think. She was constantly trying to hide from a creature that seemed to be ruling the kingdom and wanted her to become his bride. Basically at the end, she gives in as she can't run away any longer. Can't remember what kind of creature he was but was of some human form. Very vague, I know. Book was quite thick and had a green cover I think....! Any clue what it could be??

jackthehat - oh, good point! I read the book in the early 80s I think. Till2 - no, she was a mortal. The "thing" was more like a vampire I think but don't remember the typical fangs on the neck.
