can anyone recommend some modern (1960s onwards) fiction books set in washington dc? they can be any genre (horror, thriller etc) but not romamce.

You could try the Alex Cross detective stories/thrillers by James Patterson
Yes, the Alex Cross books are brillant - you could also try some Patricia Cornwell. Whilst not specifically set in Washington DC the whole time, her characters in a lot of her books do spend a lot of time there, and she does some great descriptions of Washington and the surrounding area, as well as restaurants etc.. Will go and rummage in my bookcase, and see which of her books mention Washington!
