Crichton has also been noted for his 'novel' approach to research, and will cite non-existent sources for his information. (In "The Lost World" the 'bibliography' includes a book 'written' by one of the characters). He also occasionally gets on his high horse about some somewhat out-there pet theory ("Rising Sun's" Japanese world-takeover, for instance).
I would take his claims in"State of Fear" with a pinch of salt. It's an interesting, but (IMHO) badly-written and somewhat far-fetched book. Most of his other books are a lot better.
