Of his immediate predecessors, Cezanne was probably the greatest direct influence on Picasso, especially in his development of Cubism. Of his contemporaries, only Braque during the Cubist period, and Matisse - as evidenced in the recent Tate exhibition - had much influence, though he toyed with Surrealism during the 30s. But Picasso was certainly inspired by many Old Masters - especially Goya, Velazquez, Rubens and Manet - of whose works he painted many versions. Also, he drew heavily on Greek Classical and African "primitive" sculpture both for his subjects and aspects of his style.
Other common points of inspiration for Picasso include circus folk [especially harlequins] and bull fighting [see the ceramic tiles/plates etc]. Also self portraiture was a theme he returned to time and again.
