The most powerful 'controllers' on the Planet, ie Facebook, now are openly de-platforming anyone straying outside of the leftist 'woke' agenda. When this happened recently, one of the high-profile women who was banned, had the actual police remove her from Facebook's Silicon Valley HQ when she visited reception and demanded an answer. The media giants have so much power, its going to be a prettt insurmountable task to ever rein them back in. Kudos to the last administration in the US Senate who at least made an effort to hold these faceless entities to account.
///, you'll recognise a lot of the things in the book are here in some form or another.///
I say, that's a bit anti-English, also a bit critical of the outcome of 11 years of Tory Rule. How out of character.
P.S. Boris's daily Covid bulletins put me in mind of 1984 Big Brother's daily invasion into people's homes.
P.P.S And his plethora of U-Turns aligns with the book's constant switching of "facts".
P.P.P.S Not to mention Patel's determination to clamp down on protests.

As far as the title goes, he just reversed the last two digits of the year he wrote it, to suggest it was nearly happening already. And yet here we are, 73 years on, and still hasn't arrived - though England has come close to being Airstrip One at times when it's followed the USA into wars.

1984 is a "serious" book for sure... but it's not a difficult read. I expect you will finish it quickly.
'Brave New World' is a very good companion to it and the books are often compared... once you have finished one (or both) you should have a listen to this debate which compares them... complete with dramatic readings!

Sapin Whorf had a resurrection last year in FT - Gillian Tett's column. I had to put her straight. Whorf was a safety engineer ( a whaaaaaat?) and NOT a linguist and never wrote a linguistic paper. He is the one that noticed that Petrol dumps that had rest rooms - "take your boots off and relax boys" had more avoidable safety explostions than those that had notices - drink but dont let your guard down.....
amazing what you learn on AB innit?
