Photo to poster

If I took a digital photo, how could I get it made into a poster? Would any companies online turn a print up a JPG if I emailed it?

Most print companies will do this for you (Quick Print etc.). You do need a decent resolution image though, to get a decent quality print. Remember a decent looking image needs to be printed at about 200 dpi (dots per inch). Put simply, that means that if you had an image which was 200x200 pixels. It would print well at 1"x1", the quality of the image would deteriorate if you printed it larger as the same pixels would just be stretched over a larger area. For a poster, you need a large original image. e.g. An A1 print (594mmx840mm) printed at 200dpi, would require an original image of 4600x6600pixels.
As an aside..jpg's are not the best format for this as they may be heavily compressed. Best stick to an uncompressed file format.

An uncompressed 24 bit bitmap would be ideal.

Where I work , we can print quite reasonable results onto photographic paper (Not Inkjet) from Jpeg or tiff formats . Obviously depending on the quaility and size of the original file. We find from a "normal " camera jpeg ,our professional printer can print to A3ish with no problem . This is from a 1-2meg jpeg.Any larger it depends as I said on the file .

The idea is you give them your artwork and they'll put it online for you, with the understanding that if it sells, they take care of the order and they take a cut of the selling price. In your case, you could (if you like) just arrange to have it put online and then order it yourself, without any intention of selling it (obviously if someone wants to buy a print of it, or a tee-shirt, or whatever, you're quids in!).
