lol i know, i smashed up my bike labled it 'an expression of the human race' and put it in the tate modern for 34354353
What gets me is not the ideas and concepts behind pieces, it the obscene amount of money that gets spent on them.
Some pieces are very clever and witty and interesting and make a great statement, but I have never seen one single piece that deserves the money spent on it
Many people say I could do that - well the construction of the piece is the easy part, it is the ideas, thoughts, theories, concepts and organisation that they couldnt do

The trouble is a huge percentage of the population get annoyed with modern art because they could think of a million and one better and more deserving things to do with that money either for themselves or any good cause.

Quite a lot of it is crap and is just surrounded with spiel, and unfortunately this just builds a wall between artist and viewers that means the genuinely clever and good stuff is not and cannot be appreciated.
I suppose if we are lucky suddenly everyone will catch on and realise how worthless it is - rather in the way that the price of 'rare' beanie babies suddenly and mysteriously plummetted!
The real creativity in modern art is in the marketing. Many modern artists can draw/paint/sculpt what we traditionalists would want to see if they really wanted to, but nobody wants to buy that - if they did they would buy an antique piece. Its all about controversy these days and the more you shock a Daily Mail reader the greater the price. The Impressionists were too much for some when they first appeared (particularly Mike Yarwood, he was terrible). Someone puts an unmade bed in an art gallery and then persuades Saatchi that he should pay daft money for it, I think thats genius. Im quite happy with my own unmade bed, my own poo and my Waterhouse prints thanks very much. If you think none of this makes sense then you just dont understand my work.

I agree Gloss! Too many people define art in the same narrow way their school-teacher or the dreaded Daily Mail loving, sudoku saddo folk who watch the Antiques Roadshow do. Art is a wide concept which has more than enough room to accomodate modern art (which incidentally is really roughly defined as any art from 1880's onwards)Television isn't just about soap opera there's all sorts of stuff to see...art is the same. If you want the chocolate box tedium of Constable et al then that's fine...just so long as I can see a crucifix made out of fag butts or a Hirs original we're all happy.

LONG LIVE BANKSIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Glossopswift is right; the real art in modern art is in the marketing. Contemporary 'artists' are to the art world as the likes of Blue and Westlife are to music artistry.
