His real name was Dave Morris, kept a tame squirrel in his loft and he spent his summers in a small back to back in Wigan.

He has sold more paintings since his death than he did when he was alive ( think everybody probably knows that) and Don McClean - who sang american Pie- also wrote a song about vincent. Can't remember if it was called 'Starry,starry night' or just 'Vincent'

I think he sold only one painting while alive, and yet now is the best selling artist. He suffered from some sort of mental illness, cutting off part of his ear and finally killing himself.

This means that many people today see him as the template for artists: to be a true artist you have to be part-crazy, and if everyone hates your work it's just because you're ahead of your time; posterity will prove them all wrong. This isn't necessarily true.
