Possibly The Enchanted Wood/The Faraway Tree and The Folk of the Faraway tree (three books in all) by Enid Blyton. There are three children who lived near The Enchanted Wood. They befriend the people (including Silky and Moonface) who live in The Faraway Tree which is in the middle of the wood. The Faraway tree is so tall that it's branches reach into the clouds and there is always a land at the top which changes every few days.

Or it could be The Wishing Chair ( I think there's two books) also by Enid Blyton, I'm pretty sure I remember people walking on their hands in one of these stories!
Yes! the children would visit different lands everytime they went to the top of the tree, and there was definately a land where everyone walked on their hands :o)
Yep, you're both right - it's part of the Enchanted Wood. Only reason I'm so sure is that I'm reading these books to mt girls just now. We weren't sure how they'd take to them but they love them - esecially the old saucepan man!
My 7 year old boy loves them!!!! I saw them in a book shop and bought them with the romantic notion that I loved them as a child and so would he. I expected them to have dated beyond the interest of todays seven year olds, but he reads them to himself at night and is on the last book. It appears they have universal appeal and have stood the test of time.

Ahh, how I remember the Magic Faraway Tree.
