Novel I read at school but cant remember the title (or much of the plot for that matter)

Don't know if anyone can help me but I am trying to get the title of a novel I read at school (when I was about 14).
It was about this boy who was cycling to see his mother and the adventures and people he met on his journey. But in the end he was actually cycling around a mental institution where he was a patient and the people he met on his journey were actually other patients and I think it was based in Vermont.
Apologies for being so vague but this is really all I can remember. The reason I would like to know the title is that I didn't understand the novel at the time and its been bugging me for years -24 to be exact, so I would like to re-read it.
Thanks in advance,
