I read a story back in high school about a gentleman who threw a party and with in the story it talks about different rooms. All of the rooms were painted a different color and each color add a meaning in the story. I remember that the sotry was written either in the late 1800 or early 1900.

might be "the masque of the red death" by edgar allan poe (also made into a film by roger corman starring vincent price)
there is a sequence where he walks from one room to another all in different colours, the film uses colour filters which are quite spooky
