as a kid, i read a book that featured a villain called (to the best of my recall) "iwilavit" who used to race around in some sort of airship and threaten the earth below with death rays or some such unless ransoms were paid. we are talking here about 55 years ago. does this ring a bell with anyone?

I have googled for you and found this book and its description:
The Looted Gold by John F.C. Westerman

lennypops, thank you. but my book dates from, i think, the 1940s and maybe earlier. your suggestion is too late. perhaps the author also read the same book.
