Hmm... perhaps you could try The Time Traveller's Wife by Audrey Niffeneger. Both novels assess the concept behind watching over loved-ones. In The Lovely Bones, our main character watches her family get over her death... in The Time Traveller's Wife, the lead visits different sections of his life and his loved ones and he is quite often watching over their development. I really liked The Death and Life of Charlie St cloud by Ben Sherwood. Its about a guy who works in a cemetry whose looking out for the ghost of his dead brother.
