Last Night of the Proms

This question came up in conversation - for many years (1970s? 80?) a young man in old-fashioned glasses and wearing a dinner suit used to stand in the front row at the Last Night and conduct along with the official conductor. He was always there and became well-known - even the BBC commentators used to refer to him . Then he just wasn't there one year or since.

Does anyone know who he was and what happened to him?

Quick - and very tardy - update : memory jogged by the Last Night 2007, I went back to the Prommers website, and sadly the gentleman died a number of years ago.
