crazy reader?
6 Answers
I recieved a book in the post this morning. I've been waiting for it for ages and, despite the fact that I already have several books on the go at one, I sat down and started to read it. Am I crazy? I currently have 15 different books around my house, and in bags, that I'm halfway through reading. I'm also halfway through writing two, and I have at least three short stories on the go. Does anyone else do this or am I just plain loopy?

Writing-wise, I had to finish my last novel before embarking on family history project (which I've just finished and will hopefully be published either next month or January). Now I can get on with the next novel, and the break from writing fiction has been good for me, I think.

Hmm. "Just plain loopy"?
Well, you could possibly be 'loopy' but you could never be called 'plain'. You're one of the most interesting people on AB ;-)
Anyway, your approach to things probably makes far more sense than mine. If I received a book I'd been dying to read, I wouldn't do the logical thing and read it straight away. I'd put it to one side until I was really in the mood to read it. Then I'd think about reading it and be put off by the thought of having to come to the end of it, so I'd leave it for a while. Then I'd not be in the right mood when I next thought about it. Then I'd be put off by the thought of coming to the end of it. Then . . . oh. I think you've got the picture by now ;-)
I've hunted for rare books and films for years before finally finding them in secondhand shops or on eBay. Once I get hold of them, it usually takes me several months (or, sometimes, years) before I feel exactly right about reading/viewing them. Even re-reading books is the same. I'm currently re-reading a book I first read years ago. (It's far from being 'high-brow'. It's 'The Great Crime of Grapplewick' by Eric Sykes). Because I'm 'scared' of finishing it (i.e. I'll lose the pleasure), I have to take it a few pages at a time. I could easily read it in an evening but, so far, it's taken me about 3 months to get through the first half of it!

PS: At least we seem to have one thing in common. My hard drive is cluttered up with various bits of short stories and novels which all fall into the category of 'work in progress' ;-)

I don't think you're loopy. I think you just love books.
But I think you need to train yourself to finish a book before you read another one. You're just so enthusiastic about reading. Nothing wrong with that. But there's great pleasure in fininshing a book, in the actual reading from start to finish, of being alone with the story and the characters, especially with fiction.
You should promise yourself that even when you get a book you want, that you will not read it until you finish the other one. Trust me though, I know it's hard. I have the same problem sometimes!

I generally read around 2 - 3 books at a time - various different types (eg at the moment: Leadership by Rudy Giuliani, Bare knuckles Selling by Simon Hazeldine and rereading Good Omens by Pratchett & Gaimen.
