I remember as a young lad numerous years ago reading a library book about life in the trenches in the Great War. The author used the pseudonym Private X as he was afraid to use his own name for fear of repercussions due to the extremely critical nature of the book. I cannot remember the title or publisher. Any ideas, please?
Could be War is War written by Alfred McLellan Burrage who was a journalist, poet and short-story writer born in Middlesex. He wrote under the pseudonym Ex-Private X but his published works are extremely difficult to find. He based the book on his personal experiences of trench warfare in the First World War.
