'Sleepers' by Lorenzo Carcaterra

Has this book been discredited? Any readers of the Daily Mail will possibly remember seeing this question in the paper's Q&A section recently. I saw it in someone's copy and, having read the book, was interested in the answer. Sadly, my interest was insufficient to make me buy the Mail myself. does anyone have an idea about the truth, if any, behind the book?

I seem to remember the author claiming that he had substantially changed some events to protect the innocent or some such nonsense, but as far as I know, he has never offerred up any hard evidence to back up his story, which has generally been dismissed as a publicity stunt.
