title of book

This is a real long shot but this was the first chapter book I read as a kid and I'd like to get hold of it again as it began my love of reading.

It was about a young girl who lived with her 2 aunts, they were strict and made elderflower wine. She finds a stray cat in the park and begins secretly feeding it milk and bread.

Beyond that I can't remember much it was quite a short book aimed at kids and had some black and white illustrations in it. It may have been called something along the lines of the midnight cat or something but my googling has been unsuccessful. I would have read it in around 1984-86 I think.

Hi. Some parts of your answer reminded me of a book I used to love called 'The Midnight Kittens' by Dodie Smith. However it was an orphaned brother and sister who lived with their gran and one night when they put out bread and milk for a hedgehog,four little kittens appeared and the children thought they were magical because they always appeared at midnight.
Obviously that doesn't all tie in with the details you remermber so I may be totally off track here. Good luck tracking it down. x
