Our local paper hinted that [Weds 3rd Dec], that Gatwick was out of the running, Friday's BBC [or ITV's] teletext said a decision on either Heathrow or Stansted getting it/them would be announced on Monday [yesterday] since then, nothing, so what's occuring?

Todays reports point towards Stansted, but there is still a very strong lobby for Runway 5 at Heathrow so it would seem to be not over yet. The only thing for certain is that it is not Luton, thank heaven.
heathrow local here..given the choice of building it on the admittedly precious greenland or on the site of thousands of homes (possibly mine included, if not the new runway will be very very close to my house and sort of pointing straight at it...nice) and a 1000 year old church i'd opt for the green fields every time, sad choice to have to make, if it has to be made. i think it will be stanstead just beacsue its going to be so difficult to compensate, let alone move the sheer amount of residents that would be affected by this in harmondsworth / sipson / harlington / west drayton and so on, it is a very densely populated area with a severe housing shortage....i'd like to see em try, i for one will become a leftie militant runway protester if they do :-D
Heathrow it is!
And Stansted it is!!!
Stansted by 2011. Heathrow by 2015.
