Day of the Triffids

I caught a middle episode of this dramatised on Radio 4. It was pretty good but sounded a little silly. Can someone give me a roundup of the plot, because I don't reckon I'll be bothered to read it.

John Wynfham wrote a number of 'end of the world' novels which explored what an ordinary person would so in such a situation. Now movie makers have the technologyfor the special effects, a remake of the Trifid movie would be welcome. The theme of genetically modified plants going on the rampage and killing people would strike a chord.

Perhaps my favourite was 'The Death of Grass' where a mystery virus affected grass. My first response was so what, but as Wyndham explained, wheat, rice, barley are all grass, food animals eat grass, and so as the worlds food supply vanished and civilisation collapsed, Wyndhams hero had to find a way to survive.

I do hope you'll give the books a try - they are quite short.
BBC4 will be reshowing the TV film of Triffids in its 'I Love TV' theme on weekends in June see http://www.bbc.co.uk/cult/ilove/tv/triffids/index.

Hi. John Wyndham is my favourite author! Day of the triffids didn't appeal at first, but going back to it after reading the chrysalids (my favourite!) the kraken wakes, and others, I really like it, sure it's a little old fashioned and probably sounds a little silly dramitised.....but PLEASE give it a try. (they finally find a community on isle of wight, but don't want to spoil it!) You can get it in most libraries, or 2nd hand.
