Does anyone know who said 'I before E except after C'? And is there anymore to it?

The full thing seems to be:

I before E
except after C
or when sounding like ay
as in neighbor or weigh

Some others embelish more by saying:

"and on weekends, and holidays, and all throughout May, and you'll always be wrong, no matter what you say!"

but that just adds confusion.
I know it as:

I before E
Except after C
When pronouncing it 'ee'

and I don't think there are any exceptions to that.
...then why is WEIRD spelt 'e' before 'i'...it's really weird!
neighbour and weigh wouldn't fall into that rule either Quizmonkey.
You're absolutley right, of course! Think I just uded to use it for the 'receive' type words.

So then the whole "saying" is completely confusing and we should all just stick to using spell check where ever possible!
Self-contradictory statement about rules:

There is only one rule to which there is no exception and that is the rule which states that there is an exception to every rule.
