I am trying to encourage my nearly 8 year old grandson to read more and have seen books, particularly the Magic Tree House series, by the above author recommended, would they be too young for that age group? He reads well but is reluctant to spend time reading.

So they are definitely in line with your grandson's age. Kids like these books sometimes to an obsessive extent! I second the recommendation for Capt. Underpants and also the books of Jon Scieska. Silly, guy-oriented fun books that kids enjoy.
