I think Snape just hates James because he really was good at everything and James knew it too, so he had to show-off everytime he had the chance. SO I think Snape was just jealous of him and now Harry.
I think that Snape and Lily were the ones who were truly in love. I don't think that it was unrequited. Why was Snape down by the lake if James, the boy who always tormented him, was so close? Simple:Lily. Remember Sev was sitting in a shadow of a clump of bushes. Why would he read his exam paper in the dark? I think he wanted to be near Lily, who was sitting by the lake with her friends. We always hear from James' friends about how and why Snape hated him but why did James hate Snape? I think it's because he knew that Lily loved him. I don't think that it matters if Snape called Lily a Mudblood because we know for a fact that he has NEVER insulted her infront of Harry. Snape loved Lily and I think that one of the most well hidden secrets is that Lily loved him in return.
I can't really say wether lily loved snape, there is no evidence of that but perhaps snape did love lily. It is true that he has never insulted her in front of harry, he always insultd harry or harry's father. That makes sense cuz' james was the one who ended up with lily and harry is the splitting image of james.
I think that there is no logical way that Severus Snape would EVER fall in love with Lily Evans. He dislikes every thing about her and he wouldnt bother with something as pointless as loving a mudblood. He knew she wasnt good enough for him and futher more... Just James being James was all of the incentive that Severus needed to hate him.
