there are several versions of the work; one or another gets stolen from time to time

To demean a piece of art just because you think the way it's draw is poor is like putting down Shakespere because you could write the same words on a page.
If you want a perfect representation of life take a photo!
Art is essentially a metaphor and it stands or falls on how well that metaphor communicates the artists ideas.
Whether you like it or loathe it the scream seems to speak loudly to many of us. It's disturbing, yes, and if you went on a date and saw a print of it occupying pride of place on your date's wall I think you'd run a mile (better cover it up when they call Mary ;c) )
Probably the best indication of it's power though is it's memorability. I can't imagine anyone looking at it and saying "Have I seen that before? I can't quite recall"

Fascinating responses all.
I entirely agree with natalie's summary of the effect of this work.
I think it strikes a chord in anyone who has been close to the desparation that leaps out from every aspect of this art - the design, the execution, the atmosphere it evokes.
It is such a simple design - duck-Egg - it speaks to the subconcious in us. The figure is no-one and everyone - no detail to distract from the message.
I wish I owned it!

I think I heard/read a similar thing to IAP.
I used not to be able to look at it actually, the face scared me and I found it all to chaotic. Also it reminded me of dreams where you want to scream but you can't make a sound.
These days I look at it as the main person trying to block out all the chaos behind them but failing, hence a silent scream still. But that was after I heard the covering ears thing so I've most likely been swayed to a change of opinon by that.
