Why did Mel Smith leave Hairspray ?? I must admit, his heart wasn't in it, otherwise the show was fab by the way.

Often stars are only signed up for a certain length of time.

Maybe he only wanted to commit a certain number of months to hairspray.

I think he is also happier behind the camera nowadays as he has directed a number of films (including the first Bean film)
