A Promise to Keep - Lilian Harry

I have recently read a book by Lilian Harry called "A Promise to Keep", about a woman named Thursday Tilford who is a VAD at Haslar Hospital. At the front of the book, Lilian Harry wrote an introduction about the lady whom the books events are inspired by, who had a written a number of books about her experiences as a VAD during WW2. Unfortunately, the book was borrowed and I didn't write down the name of the lady or the books, and I would love to read them. Does anybody know these details?

Hi, I am actually Lilian Harry (aka Donna Baker) and delighted to see your question. The woman' on whose autobiography I based 'A Girl Called Thursday' and its sequel 'A Promise To Keep' was called Helen Long. her book is called 'Change Into Uniform' and is well worth reading. Helen was a very interesting woman who went on to become a freelance journalist, writing in such magazines as Lady, and not long before her death she won the Rose Bowl award given by the Society of Women Writers and Journalists. She also wrote a book called 'Safe Houses Are Dangerous', which told the story of her Greek uncle who was a doctor in Marseilles during the war and helped many servicemen to escape from France and get back to England. He was eventually arrested by the Gestapo and died in Buchenwald. You may be able to get these books through your local library, or from a second-hand book website. Hello Donna I am just starting to read all of your books after returning to work as Assistant in Charge of a local library and having the borrowers recommend your books - I am thoroughly enjoying them. I have tried to get onto your web site a few times and MSN doesn't seem to be able to open it - hopefully you can chase them up as I would like to know all the books and the order to read them in as the library book of sequels is not up to date enough. Hello Rowena thanks for your reply - the order of the books is as published in the front of each book, so the later the book is the more complete the list! However, the list so far is as follows: (It is slightly complicated because the first 4 April Grove books are consecutive and the later ones run in parallel - being about different residents of AG, so the main characters of the earlier books appear as gringe characters!) Hi I've just started reading your books,i'm about half way through the first one and have already ordered the next.I live in the town next to Gosport and find it fascinating to read about places i go to entwined with gripping stories.I'm sure i'll be reading the whole series.I've also tried to enter your website and couldn't,was very dissapointed and hope it is sorted out soon.

Hi Donna I am from Canada. I have just finished reading Under The Apple Tree. Beautiful book. I have read all the others and have enjoyed them. It take a bit longer to get them here in Canada, but well worth the wait. They are by far the best books I have ever read.
