Locating A Book

About 15 years ago, I read a book about a woman raising her grandchild, I think. She was telling a friend of hers that her mother named her siblings by household items spelled backwards, like Nori for iron and Eldeen for needle. It was just a sweet fiction story based around this relationship she had with her grandchild and also a close neighbor. I do not remember the title or author. Thanks so much for your help.
