You have to be very careful if you're self-publishing. There are legitimate self-publishing houses out there who will charge you varying amounts for a variety of services. There are also a good many who aren't so honest, and it pays to do plenty of research before you commit. Self-publishing is also hard work, usually for very little monetary reward.
Best thing is to get the book written. Attend a few workshops and courses (but don't hang on their every word - it's good advice, but not gospel) and just enjoy the process of writing and getting better at it. Don't forget to read plenty, both within and outside of your own 'genre', because you can't write well unless you read well.
