It's the second in a series of five books known as the Kevin & Sadie stories, and which follow the characters' lives from their first meeting as children to their finally settling in Southern Ireland as young parents. The first is "The Twelfth Day of July" and I recommend you read that one first before you read "Across the Barricades".

As far as I know they are all still in print. I have the full set, which I bought new from Amazon a couple of years ago.
