I'm trying to remember this book that I read in the early 1990's written from the perspective of a mute Australian Girl who used sign language.  Her mother died when she was little and her father was a farmer who subsequently married her primary school teacher. It was really funny, can anybody else remember it?

That is so annoying! I can remember what the cover looked like - girl with an apple over her mouth - if it's the same one, but I can't remember the title or who wrote it! It's going to bug me now...
Hi sorry for the delay. Would it by any chance be "Blabber Mouth" by Morris Gleitzman? It was also adapted for the stage by Mary Morris which I saw here in Aus and the plot sounds familiar.(It was very funny as well). I'm pretty sure that's it. He's got a web site you can check.
