Somewhere Eliot used the horrible phrase 'the stench of women', and my apologies for repeating it here. But does anyone know where it is used? Also, can anyone tell why two of the best English-language poets of the 20th century (Eliot and Larkin) were such a pair of sh*ites in their private lives.

"This ended, to the steaming bath she moves, Her tresses fanned by little flutt'ring Loves; Odours, confected by the cunning French, Disguise the good old female stench. " comes from the (removed) introduction to The Waste Land. it was removed at the behest of Ezra Pound. Mind you as a poetic image Ive heard worse. As to the Shi'ite question Larkin blamed it on his mum and dad "They f you up your mum and dad, they do not mean to but they do....." and with Eliot you can probably blame the Baghavad Ghita. Or being so up himself.
