Whilst travelling in Oz last year I came across a book that was like the children's books where you could decide the fate of the story, like "turn to page 26 if you think she should go in the house" etc Does that make sense? Anyhow it was an adult version and I really wanted to buy it but at over $30 it was a bit expensive for a backpacker like me.

I really wished I'd written the name of the book down but I didn't and now can't think what it is called to try and find it.

I know it's a bit of a long shot but would anyone out there have heard of it and knows what I'm on about?? Thanks!

I can't help with your particular title but the kind of books you are talking about are known as 'gamebooks'. There's a list here, though I suspect it's far from complete. The external link at the bottom of the page may help.

One thing I'm curious about, when you say adult version...

Brit Kim Newman has written "Life's Lottery" which is along those lines. It seems to be OP in the UK and hence a bit dear: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lifes-Lottery-Kim-Newm an/dp/0671015974

I do have vague memories of someone who's a bit more of an "arty" author writing something along these lines more recently though.
