A friend of mine has forgotten the title of a book she wishes to recommend to me. She is very vague about the details but remembers it is set somewhere abroad on an archaeological dig and as the dig progresses the past is revealed. At the same time a young jewess, whose male relatives are dead, is subject to the control of her brother-in-law and struggles to make here own life. Themes of going back in time as well as forward. Any suggestions?

Not sure about this but it sounds like a Barbara Erskine novel.
Sounds like Labyrinth by Kate Mosse
The book is called "The Source" by James A. Michener.
It is about an archaeological dig into a mound that has built up over thousands of years, in Israel. each layer tells a different story about the period and the people in it.. It's terrific. Read and enjoy.
