Is The Kite Runner really a great work or its fame was politically motivated as it has been written in line with US policy in Afghanistan?

I'm surprised this question has not been answered already many times! Nor am I sure why anyone might think the novel was written "in line with US policy in Afghanistan". Khaled Hosseini is, in my view, a superbly talented novelist; 'The Kite Runner' is a wonderful novel. 'A Thousand Splendid Suns' is even better!!
