Just thinking back to the books that I read , when I was a kid

Was anyone as frightened as I was when looking at the illustration of the ' beast ' in the above book ?

Is it the illustration of Tash? Horrible hooked claws raised, rather tlike a tatty eagle on human -ish legs?

It looks like a child's nightmare about ghosts and monsters all rolled into one - especially the claws raised up to 'get you'. It's surprising because all the other illustrations are quite sweet.
