Disappearing lion

Here's a challenge for you. I'm trying to trace a book I had as a child (30-odd years ago) but details are somewhat sketchy. It was about a lion who drank nothing but fizzy pop. His skin turned different colours, so the zoo keeper put him on a diet of milk, which gradually made him disappear. The cure, if I recall correctly, was a diet of ginger beer which turned him yellow again. As I'm sure you can tell, the plot is a real belter with twists and turns a plenty. Well worth a read if you can find it.. Anyway, if anyone can spare the time to indulge me, I'd really like to find it for my kids. Thanks.
