Can anyone deny, or confirm, that the only place you can legally purchase a bible on Sundays, is an airport departure lounge. or is my mate winding me up

I guess he's winding you up - any branch of Waterstones will sell you a bible on a Sunday - or any other day they are open. Where do these notions come from?

While you're telling him this - confirm that the saxophone on 'Baker Street' was not played by Bob Holness from 'Blockbusters' - that's a wind-up as well!

There were some strange quirks in Sunday trading legislation before the Sunday Trading Act in 1994(?). It always used to be said that it was legal to buy a pornographic magazine on a Sunday but not a bible but I never found out whether that was an urban myth or not.
My guess is that it might have been true at some point in the past but certainly not in the past 40 years...but that's just my guess.
It may not be true about the Bible now, but it certainly use to be  - and not that long ago either. I was actually  inside a church, saw a particular Bible that I wanted, but as it was a Sunday asked if I would return in the week because selling it would contravene the Sunday Trading Laws. Nuts?
