In sons and lovers, in chapter 11, when paul says 'clouds are on fire' to miriam, what does that mean? . Does anyone know please.

It means his back passage is hurting somewhat after a particularaly bad vindaloo and it is painful for him to pass wind.

If the scene was set in the evening it might mean they're reflecting the setting sun.

No because the sun sets in the west, unless you are sitting on the peninsular in Scarborough in which case it seems to set over the sea, which it shouldnl;t of course as scarborough is on the east coast
