Is he the chap with the quiff? What's the book about?
Always liked Mark Kermode and what he does'nt know about Films is not worth knowing.

Great documentary on The French Connection and The Exorcist DVD's that he wrote and narrated.
Question Author
Yes, films and that.
It's enjoyable, some of it was way over my head, jokes about films and people I've never heard of (he even questioned why Megan Fox exists, I can think of a few qualities she possesses) but overall it was a good evening.
Glad you enjoyed it 123everton.......If he came down here on he south coast and had 'an evening with' night, andi was free, i'd go too. :0)
'Film criticism is rarely as much fun as Kermode, whether on the radio or in this hugely entertaining book.' -- David Hughes, Empire

'It's Only a Movie offers a droll account of Kermode's rise to becoming the most prominent, and extravagantly quiffed, movie pundit in Britain.' -- Stephen Dalton, The Times

'In an industry where serious film criticism is increasingly marginalised, we're lucky to have him.'
-- Ali Catterall, Word Magazine
He writes a good movie column in The Guardian.
He thinks The Exorcist is the greatest film ever made. I think he is an idiot. I think Kim Newman is probably the best film critic around, very knowledgeable and writes well, but I don't think he's on telly much, worse luck. Still, I can read.
If Kermode were to meet you. jno, he may very well be of the same opinion....:0)........and completely agree with Kim Newman.....the man is sheer class, especially his Video Dungeon section in Empire magazine where he analyses the more obscure and hard to find DVD movies out there.
he wouldn't like me, yogi, as I am unable to turn my head around 360 degrees or do the spider walk.
Kermode is hit and miss. His speciality is Horror films and as such I tend to find myself agreeing with his reviews of that genre (although, not about the exorcist)

And his general lambasting of man-child lad-films is more than welcome.

But he does often miss the point when out of his comfort zone/area of expertise.

All this said, I find Kermode and Mayo on 5 Live on Fridays to be rather entertaining.

Spare Ed
LOL.........Yep, jno..... he does seem a little obsessed with The Exorcist, i agree, but it is a good film for it's day and is still scary now. Not bad for a film made in 1973.

......but try and catch his French Connection documentary on the SE DVD......brilliant.
I try and catch Kermode and Mayo on Fridays too, Ed, if i can.......very entertaining and they do have it live online in the studio, so you can see them with the audience on occasions. Good stuff.
I used to listen to him on Talk Radio on the Simon Mayo show. He reviewed a film called 'Audition' and told me that it wasn't 'hide behind the sofa scary', so I hired it out to watch on one evening with friends. We had some drinks in and I was going to cook us some snacks, etc.
I ended up feeling so unwell I went to bed...........and they had to send out for pizzas !

I no longer trust his reviews of horror films........:o/
LOL........he's got a stronger stomach, JTH x
You need a very strong stomach to watch that film, Yogi..............it's horrible and I can't think of one redeeming feature, either !
I love Kermode's rants on Five Live. They make my fridays. I agree with AB Ed about lad films. I want to tell them all to watch Hard Candy and then laugh about violence against women in films.
zita-green, who laughs about violence against women in films exactly?
Question Author
JNO, do you like the film 'Mary Poppins'?
indubitably
big fan, everton. For one thing, the kids in it don't go swearing it and blaming it on the devil.
