Name of book!

I read a book years ago and I loved it but cannot think of the name of it! I as studying at the time and we were doing a couse on gender and sexuality which was one of the main themes. Thing is I read so many books around the same time I don't know if I am mixing them together!
The one I am thinking of starts with a guy following a young prostitue through dirty streets, she is wearing red. There is an allegory of a cave being a vagina...(Socrates theory?) and a glass house that gets detroyed...
I know its a long shot but would love to get the book to read again!
