It's a play by Harold Pinter

and it was universally referred to as gibberish, rubbish and tedious by the critics of the time, taking a total box office of �2 in its first run as a result.

Needless to say no-one remembers who the critics were at all.

I remember seeing a production of The Caretaker in the 80s. It was so bad that had it been the FIRST production, it would never have been seen again. He writes in such a particular way that it's easy as a director or an actor to **** it up completely and make him look a terrible writer. And some still think he is just that.
