Amongst other things, I'm looking for an old fashioned wooden stepladder, biscuit barrel and tobacco jar, circa 1919, for a new stage production of Noel Coward's "This Happy Breed".

Needless to say, for as few pennies as possible!

Can anybody help, please?

I would try your local charity shops for the biscuit barrel and tobacco jar, you never know what they might have that will be right or can be adapted. don't know where you might get the ladder from though, sorry.
I've got a wooden step ladder which is from my Mums house. (Where are you based?) I would try any elderly neighbours, if they are like my parents they never throw anything away!

apologies if you've already thought of this but we used to approach our local 'junk' shops all the time - in return for a couple of free tickets and/or free ad in the programme.  After a while we built up quite good realtionships & the shop-owners would often keep hold of knick-knacks that might otherwise be left behind when doing a house-clearance in the off-chance we might need them for props.

Hi stageman,

I'm not sure where you are in the country but there is a company called "Fake & Phoney" based in Surrey who make terrific props and they are not too expensive to hire. If you are interested post a reply and I'll try and find their contact details for you.
