Naval piercing

Hi all. I had my naval pierced 4 months ago (ok, so i'm 44, but you are never too old are you?!)... anyway my question is can I change it yet? The piercer says it's ok after 2 months but preferably leave it 6 months. Also i'm nervous about changing it. Does it hurt? I heard it closes up VERY quickly..is this true?

Hi Gaynor - good for you!

I changed mine after about 3 months, actually it fell out so I was forced to get a new one and put it in. I put the new one in whilst in the bath, under water, gave it a good clean. It didn't hurt at all. Had to give it a push in a few directions as I couldn't find the 'exit' hole but got there in the end and it has been fine ever since.

1 word of warning, I took mine out to change it after about 6 months, I left it about 30 min after taking the old ring out and before putting the new one in, it had closed up!! Had to get it re-pierced. This was 8 years ago, not changed it since!!

Get your new bar ready and lie down. Put some luke warm salty water on your stomach so that it 'puddles' in your naval. Slide the old bar out and gently glide the new one in. Dont push it too hard, it should find its own way. Dont worry about it or you will get flustered. It wont hurt and it wont heal up, just dont change it too often.

Thanks for the replies - very helpful. Still nervous but will buy a new belly bar a get all prepared before i do the deed!!

I would suggest leaving it til you've had it 6 months. I know it's boring to wait and the temptation to change it is so strong but I really think it would be for the best for you to leave it in as long as you can. If you change it too early you risk damaging the freshly healed tissue inside the piercing hole and that can be painful or undo loads of healing that you've acheived. I changed mine too early and got "the bump" which is basically a piece of flesh that sticks out of one of the holes and looks horrid and can hurt.

oh and by the way, when you do change it, make sure you're not in a hurry and you have everything ready. if you put a tiny bit of savlon or moisturiser on the new bar before putting it in, it can help to lubricate it so that it slides in easily. in this case, savlon is ok to use on the piercing because it is healed already
