Dying your own hair.

How difficult is it? I have long hair and want to dye it. Should I attempt to do it myself or wait till someone else can help. I want to do it now, if I wait then it will be for over another week. Should I just go for it and hope for the best? Can it easily be done by yourself? Thanks for any help.

Hi misty, if it's long, I wouldn't reccomend doing it on your own, it would be very messy & you might not give it an even colour! Find someone to help you! xxx

Depends on your hair colour. I have mid back length straight hair (my hair is my thing), love it, and I dyed it for the first time myself around 6 weeks ago as I couldn't afford the hairdressers �76.00. Was delighted with the result I used Nutrisse bright blonde and as I already have highlights it lifted all the colours right back up. I am naturally a messy blonde brown, and I used this one, as I say it brought out my highlights again no end. Have done it again twice since just to brighten it up again, and will continue till I have the funds to go back - or when my highlight completely grow out. They were last done around Xmas - so you can imagine what they were like and I was depressed looking in the mirror! beofre I took the plunge!!! :(

Sorry meant to say 10 weeks ago and twice since, and my highlights as I didn't explain are low and highlights with bright blonde inbetween. Trust me, I was soooooo sceptical but had no option. Am now glad I did it! Everyone at wk and home has commented how good it looks tooo which is a bonus!!!!

I used to have long hair and I ruined it because I coloured it myself. It's now short, and I get it coloured at a salon. I would get help if you want to do it at home.

i have long hair myself and when i color it i just simply apply the color as shampoo just make sure you use an old towel over your shoulders as you dont want to ruin your chlothes x

go for it and colour it yourself! i was blonde and did black to mine by myself and mine is middle of back lenght turned out fine!! just make sure you dont spill any on your clothes, towels, bathroom suite! and buy some "stain away" towels for around 99p from Superdrug to get rid of the mishaps you get on your hair line or on your face... if you dont want to take the plunge yourself the salon charges for me �50 for full head colour and then �25 for touch up every month (that includes a cut blow dry and wash etc....) xx

What colour would you be going for? If it's only one or two shades lighter or darker, I'd go for it. I used to have very long and thick hair (down to my waist almost) and always did it by myself (just to brighten in up though, as I'm blonde). Even now, although it's short and much easier, I went bright red and did it myself, no problem at all. If you want a radical change however, you'd be better off having someone on hand to help, in case you miss a bit at the back. Also, use 2 packs of product if your hair is thinck.

If you are unsure, have a go with a semi permanent colour first, I dye my hair myself as it is too expensive at the hairdressers. Last time the hairdressers did it, I had to do it again myself as the colour wasn't right.
If it's very long or thick, get a friend to help, also make sure you do the front really well or you end up with missed bits on your forehead, that look very odd. lol

I dye my own hair too - used to go to a salon but I had to choose paying my utilities this winter or going to the salon. I tried a few different home dyes and settled on Clairol Nice and Easy - it really does give different tones of the colour. My hair dresser was surprised and quite impressed when he saw the Clairol results. I was on here several weeks ago asking advice about going from brunette to blonde and I did that successfully all by myself with home dyes. I'm now a beautiful shade of light ash blonde ready for summer. Good luck.

I have brought two packs of dye and am planning on going from lightish brown to pretty bright red. I have no problem doing it at home rather than at the hairdressors, as I can no longer afford to keep getting it done there. I just wasn't sure about trying it myself incase I missed parts or it went wrong and I'd have no one to panic with.

I'm going to wait till next weekend when I visit home and get my mum to help me with it. That way if anything goes wrong I can freak out, blame her and she'll get me drunk to forget it LOL
